The Straight 8 Shootout is a filmmaking competition in which participants create short films using a single cartridge of Super 8mm film — without any editing. Films must be shot in story order, with all visuals captured in-camera, and sound recorded and submitted separately. The first time we see the completed films is on the big screen at Cinéma Arcades in Cannes, making the reveal a truly exciting experience!

C’est Un Festin was my directorial debut, and one I’m deeply proud of. From the earliest spark of the idea to the nerve-wracking but ultimately rewarding day on set, the entire process reminded me why I love creating work like this. I experienced a visceral joy developing this strange, theatrical concept, a feverish little world of ritual and symbolism, and watching it come to life through the lens, and fully trusting the Super 8 camera, was nothing short of magical. I’m immensely grateful to the brilliant team whose generosity, trust, and hard work made this passion project possible. Their belief in the offbeat, beautiful world of this feast gave the film its beating heart.

There was something profoundly exhilarating about stepping behind the camera, this time with complete authorship, to shape a world that felt instinctively right, however unexpected. I know this idea might have surprised some, and perhaps worried a few, but I hope it demonstrates the range I’m striving for, the ability to shift between visual languages and fully immerse myself in new worlds. I also hope you feel some of that, watching it.
